WPC decking vs the alternatives
WPC (wood-plastic composite) decking gives you the warmth of a wooden deck without the yearly oiling and the rot. Here is how it compares to the other outdoor options for UAE villas and balconies.
| WPC decking | Natural wood decking | Outdoor porcelain tiles | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Material | Wood fibres mixed with recycled plastic | Solid timber boards | Fired porcelain slabs |
| Weather resistance | Built for sun and rain, will not rot or splinter | Needs regular oiling and sealing, can rot and crack | Excellent, colorfast in harsh sun |
| Maintenance | Sweep and wash down, no sealing ever | Sanding and re-oiling every year or two | Wash down, occasional regrouting |
| Heat underfoot | Warm in sun, lighter colors stay cooler | Warm, similar to WPC | Can get very hot in direct sun |
| The look | Wood look, consistent board to board | Natural grain, silvers with age if unoiled | Modern stone or concrete look |
| Best for | Balconies, rooftops, pool surrounds, gardens | Premium natural-wood projects with regular upkeep | Wet areas and ultra-modern minimal designs |
If you love the idea of a deck but not the maintenance diary that comes with real timber, WPC is the practical answer. Pair it with artificial grass for a complete low-maintenance outdoor space. Book a site visit and we will measure your balcony or garden and show you board samples in daylight.
How to choose WPC decking in the UAE
UAE sun is brutal on outdoor materials, so decking choices here matter more than in milder climates. These are the decisions we work through with every decking customer.
Color and heat go together
Dark decking boards absorb serious heat in UAE summer sun and can be uncomfortable under bare feet at midday. Lighter greys and natural tones stay noticeably cooler. If your heart is set on a dark shade, plan for shade sails or use it in areas you mainly enjoy in the evening.
Solid vs hollow boards
Solid boards are denser and handle heavy furniture and high traffic best. Hollow boards are lighter and perfectly fine for normal foot traffic on balconies. Tell us how the space will be used, dining sets and planters versus just lounging, and we will specify accordingly.
The subframe is the real job
Decking sits on a joist subframe, and that structure decides whether your deck stays level for years. Joists need correct spacing, ventilation underneath, and room for water to drain away. A deck is only as good as what is under it, so ask how the subframe will be built, not just which boards you get.
Drainage, always
Water must never sit trapped under or on the deck. Boards are laid with gaps for a reason, and the base needs a slight fall or drainage path. This matters on balconies with limited runoff and on rooftops alike. We plan drainage into every installation rather than hoping for the best.
Match the board to the sun exposure
A shaded balcony and a full-sun rooftop are different environments. Quality WPC is UV-stabilized, but boards in relentless direct sun still weather faster than shaded ones. Tell us the orientation and shading of your space and we will recommend honestly, including when a different material suits better.
Heights, doors, and thresholds
Decking raises the floor level, which affects door clearances, especially sliding doors to balconies. Measure the threshold height before committing. Low-profile subframe options exist for tight situations. This is a standard check on our site visits and it avoids nasty surprises on installation day.

Living with WPC decking
This is the payoff for choosing composite: the maintenance list is short and there is no oiling, sanding, or sealing on it.
Sweep often, wash occasionally
Desert dust settles on everything outdoors. A regular sweep keeps the deck looking fresh, and a wash with a garden hose and a soft brush every so often lifts what sweeping leaves behind. Avoid harsh chemicals and bleach, mild soap and water does the job.
Mind the plant pots and BBQ
Pot saucers prevent the ring stains that form when soil and water sit against the boards. Under a barbecue, use a protective mat, grease spots are much easier to prevent than to remove. Wipe food and drink spills when they happen, not next weekend.
Furniture without fear
Unlike natural timber, WPC will not splinter under chair legs or dent easily under a dining set. Still, lift heavy planters rather than dragging them, dragging grit under a heavy pot can scratch any decking surface.
Summer heat strategy
In peak summer, any deck in direct sun gets warm. Outdoor rugs in seating zones, a shade sail, or simply using the space in the morning and evening makes it comfortable. Lighter board colors, chosen at the start, pay off every single summer.
More WPC decking questions, answered honestly
Does WPC decking get hot in UAE summer? +
Honestly, yes in direct midday sun, like any outdoor surface here. It is comparable to natural wood and cooler than dark tiles. Lighter colors, shade sails, and outdoor rugs in seating areas make a real difference. If your space has zero shade and bakes all afternoon, talk to us about the best color and layout before deciding.
Can WPC decking go over existing balcony tiles? +
Yes, this is a very common installation. The joist subframe sits on top of the existing tiles, so there is no demolition mess. We check three things on the visit: that water still drains properly, that door thresholds still clear, and that the tiles underneath are sound.
Is WPC decking suitable around swimming pools? +
Yes. It does not splinter like timber, which matters for bare feet, and textured boards give good grip when wet. Rinse off chlorinated or salty pool water occasionally so it does not leave residue on the boards. We will recommend a suitable profile for poolside use.
Will the color fade over time? +
Quality WPC is UV-stabilized and holds its color well, though you may notice slight weathering in the first months as the surface settles, similar to how any outdoor material beds in. After that it stays consistent. This is nothing like natural timber, which silvers dramatically unless constantly oiled.
Can mold grow on WPC in humid weather? +
The composite itself resists rot and mold far better than natural wood. What can grow is surface algae or mildew on dust and organic debris sitting on the boards in damp, shaded spots. Regular sweeping and an occasional wash prevent it entirely. Good subframe ventilation helps too, which is why we build decks with airflow in mind.
How long does decking installation take? +
A standard balcony often takes a day or two. Larger villa terraces and rooftops take longer because the subframe is the bulk of the work. Access matters too, carrying materials to a rooftop takes time. After the site visit we give you a realistic schedule.

Is WPC decking slippery when wet? +

How long does WPC decking last outdoors? +
