PVC and acrylic sheets vs other glossy wall finishes
Short version: if you want that seamless, high-gloss, marble-or-solid-color look without grout lines or stone weight, sheets are the shortcut. Here is how they stack up against the alternatives.
PVC / acrylic sheets (this page)
Large-format glossy panels with marble, stone, or solid-color prints, fixed straight to the wall. No grout lines, lightweight, and the gloss bounces light around the room. Popular for TV backdrops, entrance walls, and kitchen backsplashes.
Glass panels
Real glass gives unmatched depth and handles heat well, which is why it leads for backsplashes directly behind hobs. But it is heavy, needs precise templating, and any measuring mistake means reordering a custom panel.
Natural marble or stone
The real material, with a depth no print fully matches. Also the heaviest and most labor-intensive option, and porous stone needs sealing against stains. Sheets are the lower-maintenance stand-in, not the identical twin.
Gloss / lacquered paint finish
A skilled spray finish can look sleek and is easy to touch up later. But it shows every wall imperfection underneath, and achieving a true mirror gloss on plaster takes serious preparation. The wall has to be near perfect first.
Choosing between sheets and the real stone look? It comes down to weight, maintenance, and how close anyone will get. Send a photo of the wall on WhatsApp and we will advise honestly. You can also book a visit to compare samples side by side.
How to choose PVC and acrylic sheets in the UAE
Two sheets can look identical in an online photo and perform very differently on your wall. These are the things we check ourselves before recommending any sheet to a customer.
Decide how much gloss you want
High-gloss sheets reflect the most light and look the most dramatic, but they also show fingerprints and every speck of dust. Satin finishes are calmer and more forgiving. In bright UAE rooms with lots of glass, think about what the gloss will reflect.
Sheet size versus your wall
Bigger sheets mean fewer joints and a more seamless look. Measure each wall and plan the layout so joints land in sensible places, not mid-feature. We plan this on the site visit, because a badly placed joint ruins the whole effect.
Respect heat distances
Acrylic and PVC are not heat shields. On the surrounding backsplash wall they are fine, but directly behind high-heat burners is the exception. Tell us your cooker layout at the visit and we will mark the safe zones for sheeting.
The wall must be flat
Glossy sheets mirror whatever sits behind them, including bumps and waves. The substrate needs to be flat and sound before sheets go up. Uneven walls get leveled first, which is normal preparation rather than a problem.
Judge the print up close
Marble-look prints vary enormously. Look at a full-size sample from normal viewing distance and then up close. Good prints have varied, natural-looking veining with no obvious repeat; poor ones repeat the same vein pattern visibly across the sheet.
Plan sockets and edges first
Decide where sockets, switches, and sheet edges will fall before any cutting starts. Cutouts should be clean and sealed, and outer edges finished with proper trims. These small details are what separate a professional install from one that looks improvised.

Living with glossy sheets in a UAE home
Gloss looks after itself if you treat it gently. The entire care routine fits in one short list.
Fingerprints are the main chore
High-gloss finishes show every touch. A dry microfiber cloth handles daily prints; a slightly damp one with a mild cleaner handles the rest. Keep a microfiber cloth in the room and it stays a ten-second job.
No abrasives, ever
Scouring pads, stiff brushes, and gritty cleaners scratch gloss permanently, and there is no fixing a scratched sheet short of replacing it. Soft cloths and mild cleaners only. This one rule preserves the finish for years.
Keep heat away from the surface
Do not rest kettles, irons, or heat tools against the sheets, and respect the cooker clearance the installer advised. Heat distortion is not reversible, so prevention is the entire strategy here.
Sunlight and printed finishes
Intense, direct sun over long periods can affect some printed finishes. On walls with harsh all-day sun, check with us which finishes are rated for it, or plan window coverings the way you would for furniture and flooring.
More sheet questions, answered honestly
Can sheets go over existing tiles? +
Often yes, if the tiles are sound, flat, and firmly fixed; the sheets go straight over them and you skip demolition entirely. Loose or hollow tiles need attention first. We check by tapping the wall during the site visit.
Are they OK behind a kitchen stove? +
On the surrounding backsplash wall, yes. Directly behind high-heat burners is the exception, since heat is the one thing these sheets do not tolerate. We mark the safe zones when we measure your kitchen, so there is no guesswork.
Will the marble look convince anyone? +
Honestly: from normal room distance, good prints look convincingly like stone, and most visitors will not question it. Up very close, or to the touch, you can tell it is not quarried marble. If that distinction matters to you, consider real stone; if the look matters, sheets deliver it.
Do the joints show? +
Sheets are large, so there are far fewer joints than tiles, and none of the grout lines. Joints are finished with color-matched trims or sealant and sit flat against the wall. Planned well, you stop noticing them within a day.
Can a damaged sheet be replaced? +
Yes, individual sheets can be removed and replaced without redoing the whole wall. Keep a note of the exact finish name somewhere safe, since prints can vary slightly between production batches.
How do I clean kitchen grease off them? +
A soft cloth with warm water and a mild degreasing cleaner, then a dry microfiber buff to restore the gloss. Avoid harsh solvents and abrasive pads. Regular light cleaning beats occasional aggressive scrubbing, every time.
