About SPC Herringbone Flooring

Why herringbone stands out in interiors across the UAE

Herringbone is a V-shaped interlocking pattern that adds real visual texture compared to standard straight-plank flooring. Built on the same 100% waterproof SPC core, it brings the durability of SPC together with a much higher-end finish, a popular choice for UAE villas' majlis and formal living areas.

Because the pattern requires precision cutting and careful alignment, herringbone flooring is one area where professional installation makes a visible difference, a slightly uneven cut is far more noticeable in a herringbone layout than in straight planks.

Herringbone SPC vs the alternatives

Herringbone is a pattern, not a material. The zigzag layout is what turns heads, and you can get it in several materials. Here is how herringbone SPC stacks up, so you pick the right combination of look and practicality.

Herringbone SPC Straight-lay SPC Real wood herringbone LVT planks
What it is SPC planks laid in a zigzag pattern SPC planks in straight rows Solid or engineered wood blocks in zigzag Flexible vinyl planks, straight or patterned
Water resistance Waterproof core, safe for kitchens Waterproof core, safe for kitchens and baths Sensitive to water, needs careful maintenance Waterproof to highly water-resistant
Installation Specialist pattern work, many angled cuts Standard floating installation Glue-down, then sanding and sealing Standard floating or glue-down
Maintenance Sweep and damp mop, like all SPC Sweep and damp mop Periodic resealing, quick spill cleanup Sweep and damp mop
The look Crisp zigzag, a modern classic Clean, calm linear look Richest natural grain, ages with patina Softer look and feel underfoot
Best for Entrances, living rooms, feature areas Whole homes, rentals, busy households Formal low-moisture rooms Bedrooms and comfort-first spaces

Torn between the drama of herringbone and the calm of straight planks? Many of our customers use herringbone in the entrance and living area, then straight-lay SPC flooring in the bedrooms. Book a site visit and we will lay both patterns out in your actual space so you can see the difference.

Buying guide

How to choose herringbone SPC in the UAE

Herringbone is less forgiving than straight-lay, so the planning stage matters more. These are the details we sort out with every herringbone customer before a single plank is cut.

🧭

Pattern direction changes the room

The zigzag draws the eye along its longest lines. Run it toward the main window or entrance and the room feels longer and more welcoming. This is a five-minute conversation with your installer that makes a visible difference, so do not leave it to chance on installation day.

📐

Subfloor flatness is non-negotiable

Pattern work shows up every dip and hump in the subfloor, much more than straight planks do. The base needs to be flat, smooth, and clean before we start. We check this on every site visit and level where needed, because a wavy herringbone is worse than no herringbone.

🧱

Plank size sets the mood

Smaller planks make a busier, more traditional pattern that suits entrances and smaller rooms. Larger planks give a bolder, more contemporary zigzag for open-plan villa living areas. Look at full pattern samples, not single planks, because one plank tells you nothing about the finished effect.

✂️

Allow extra material for cuts

Every edge of a herringbone floor is an angled cut, which means more offcuts than straight-lay. Ordering roughly ten percent extra is normal and sensible. Running short mid-installation is a real problem, because a later batch can vary slightly in shade.

🔲

Plan borders and transitions

A single-plank border around the room frames the zigzag beautifully and gives a clean edge at walls and doorways. Decide in advance where herringbone stops and another floor starts, so transitions land in sensible places like under doors rather than mid-room.

👷

Check the installer's pattern work

Laying straight planks and laying herringbone are different skills. Ask to see photos of actual herringbone floors the installer has completed, not just straight-lay work. Crisp, consistent angles and tight joints are what you are looking for.

Measuring a room for herringbone? Run your numbers through the flooring quantity calculator, add a little extra for the angled cuts, and send us the result on WhatsApp for an accurate quote.

Day to day

Living with herringbone SPC

Day to day it behaves exactly like any quality SPC. The pattern only changes a couple of small habits.

Vacuum with the pattern, not against it

A herringbone floor has far more joints than straight-lay, and fine dust settles into them. A vacuum with a hard-floor head, worked along the direction of the planks, lifts it out easily. A quick once-over a few times a week keeps the zigzag looking crisp.

Sand control matters even more

Desert sand is abrasive on any floor, and on herringbone it collects visibly in the pattern joints. Good doormats at every entrance and a regular sweep protect the finish and keep the pattern sharp, especially in ground-floor villas.

Damp mop, same as straight SPC

A well-wrung damp mop with a mild cleaner is all it needs. Skip steam mops and bleach, which can dull the wear layer over time. Work the mop along the plank directions and the joints stay clean without much effort.

Keep a few spare planks

If a plank ever gets badly damaged, a herringbone repair needs a matching plank in the right orientation, and dye lots can shift between batches. Keep the offcuts from installation in a dry store room. Future you will be grateful.

More answers

More herringbone questions, answered honestly

Does herringbone take longer to install than straight planks? +

Yes, noticeably. Every plank is measured, cut at an angle, and fitted into the zigzag, so a herringbone floor takes more installer hours than the same area in straight rows. When you compare quotes, check that the labor reflects pattern work rather than a standard straight-lay rate.

Can herringbone SPC go over existing tiles? +

Yes, provided the tiles are solid, flat, and well bonded. Wide or deep grout lines may need a levelling layer first, because the pattern highlights unevenness. We check the existing floor during the site visit and tell you honestly whether it can stay or should come up.

Does herringbone make a small room look bigger? +

It adds movement and interest, which suits entrances, hallways, and living areas. In a genuinely tiny room, though, a busy zigzag can feel restless, and calm straight planks often work better. If you are unsure, we can mock up both layouts with loose planks during the visit.

Can I mix herringbone and straight-lay SPC in one home? +

Absolutely, and it is one of the most popular combinations we install. Herringbone in the entrance and main living area, straight-lay SPC in bedrooms and corridors. Use planks from the same range so the color and finish match, and plan a neat transition strip where the two meet.

Is herringbone SPC suitable for kitchens? +

Yes. The SPC core is waterproof, so splashes and mopping are no problem. The only difference from straight-lay is that crumbs collect in the extra joints, so kitchens appreciate a quick daily sweep. A site visit lets us confirm your kitchen subfloor is flat enough for pattern work.

How long does a herringbone installation take? +

It depends on the area and how much subfloor preparation is needed, but expect it to run longer than straight-lay for the same square meters. A single room can often be done in a day or two; a full villa takes several days. We give you a realistic schedule after measuring, not before.

FAQ

Common questions

Slightly, it requires precise cutting and alignment, which is why professional installation matters. Our team is experienced specifically with herringbone layouts.

Does the pattern work in small rooms? +

Yes, herringbone can make a small room feel larger by drawing the eye, and works especially well in entryways and majlis areas.

It typically costs more due to the extra cutting and installation time, we'll confirm an exact quote after the free site visit.
