Compare

Curtains vs blinds vs shutters

Every window covering controls light, but they do it with very different looks and effort. Curtains bring softness and drama that hard treatments cannot match. Here is the honest comparison so you dress each window for what the room needs.

Curtains Blinds Shutters
Light control Sheer to blackout, or layered both on one track Tilt slats for angled, adjustable light Louvers give sturdy, precise control
Privacy Full with the right lining, sheer alone is daytime only Good and adjustable through the day Excellent, especially for street-facing windows
Look and softness Soft and warm, makes a room feel finished Neat and minimal, fades into the background Structured and architectural
Cleaning Machine or dry clean, depending on the fabric Wipe slats, though dust settles in cords Wipe down, dust between louvers
Best for Bedrooms, majlis, living rooms, full drama or full dark Kitchens, bathrooms, home offices Villas and street-facing windows

Many homes use both: blinds for daytime control, curtains for evenings and softness. If you are mixing, book a site visit and we will plan the layers with you.

Buying guide

How to choose curtains in the UAE

Curtains fail for boring reasons: wrong measurements, no lining, fabric that cannot take the sun. Get these six things right and the pretty part takes care of itself.

๐ŸŒ‘

Blackout, sheer, or both

Bedrooms need proper blackout for sleep, especially with early sunrises and street light. Living areas usually want sheer for daytime privacy with light. The best of both is a double track: sheer for the day, blackout for the night, and you will use both daily.

โ˜€๏ธ

Lining is what fights the sun

The lining, not the face fabric, takes the punishment from UAE sun. A good lining protects the decorative fabric from fading, adds body to the drape, and improves blackout. Unlined curtains on a sunny window fade and thin out far faster than you would expect.

๐Ÿ“

Measure like a fitter

Width needs fullness: the curtain should measure roughly twice the track width to gather properly instead of hanging flat. Length usually means floor-skimming or a slight break on the floor. And mount the track high and wide, near the ceiling and past the window edges, it makes windows look far bigger.

๐Ÿงต

Fabric weight and drape

Heavy fabrics like velvet give luxurious folds and excellent blackout, but need strong tracks. Light linens feel airy and relaxed but crease and offer little privacy alone. Feel the fabric gathered in your hand, not flat on a table: the drape you see bunched is the drape you will live with.

๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ

Room by room

Bedrooms: blackout plus lining, non-negotiable for good sleep. Majlis and living rooms: layered sheer and dress curtains for day-to-night flexibility. Kitchens: keep fabric away from the hob, or choose blinds there instead. Kids' rooms: washable fabrics and cordless headings for safety.

๐Ÿช

Tracks, rods, and what they fix into

Heavy lined curtains need a proper track or a strong rod with solid brackets, fixed into something structural. Gypsum ceilings and hollow walls need the right anchors, and this is where professional installation earns its keep. A track pulling out of the ceiling ruins the whole investment.

Day to day

Living with curtains in a UAE home

Curtains mostly look after themselves. The care they do need is about sun and dust, our two constants.

Dust before you wash

Fine dust settles into folds, and washing dusty curtains just moves the dirt around. Shake them out or vacuum with an upholstery attachment every month or two. You will be surprised how much fresher they look with no washing at all.

Washing: check the fabric first

Cotton and polyester curtains usually machine wash fine on gentle. Linen, silk, and velvet generally want dry cleaning. Always check the care label, and remember the lining may have different needs than the face fabric. When in doubt, dry clean. Sun-weakened fabric can tear in a home machine, which turns a cleaning day into a replacement job.

The sun always wins eventually

Even lined curtains fade slowly on the sun side over the years. Rotating which panels take the brunt, drawing sheers during peak hours, and choosing fade-resistant linings all slow it down. When one panel fades faster than its pair, that is sun, not a fabric defect.

Steam, tie-backs, and hems

A handheld steamer smooths out creases in minutes and freshens fabric between washes. Tie-backs let light flood in during the day while showing off the fabric. And keep hems just kissing the floor: dragging hems collect dust and fray, floating hems look accidentally short.

More answers

More curtain questions, answered honestly

Will blackout curtains really make my bedroom dark? +

Yes, with proper blackout lining and a track that wraps past the window edges. The weak points are always light leaking around the sides and top, not through the fabric. A ceiling-mounted track with generous overlap seals those gaps, and that installation detail matters as much as the fabric.

Will the UAE sun fade my curtains? +

Eventually, on sun-facing windows, yes. Quality lining dramatically slows it by taking the UV hit instead of the face fabric. Dark and saturated colors show fading first, while lighter neutrals hide it longest. Drawing a sheer layer during peak sun hours is the simplest protection.

Can I hang curtains over my existing blinds? +

Absolutely, it is a popular combination. The blinds handle daytime light and privacy, the curtains add softness and evening blackout. Mount the curtain track on the ceiling or wall in front of the blind recess, leaving enough depth that the curtain does not catch on the blind.

How do I measure my windows for curtains? +

Measure the track width, not the window, and plan curtain fabric at about twice that width for proper fullness. For length, measure from the track to where you want the hem, usually just touching the floor. When we do the site visit we measure everything ourselves, so you do not need to get this perfect in advance.

Can I wash curtains at home? +

Many can: cottons and polyesters usually go in the machine on gentle. But linen, silk, velvet, and most lined curtains are safer dry cleaned, and sun-weakened fabric can tear in a home machine. Check the care label on both the face fabric and the lining before deciding.

How long do made-to-measure curtains take? +

From site visit and fabric selection to finished installation is typically a couple of weeks, since each panel is cut and stitched to your measurements. Track installation happens first, then the finished curtains are hung and dressed. We confirm the timeline for your order at the site visit.
