Artificial Grass - Clad and Craft Tradding LLC
Villa owners walk into our Capital Mall showroom with the same photo on their phone. A patchy garden in Khalifa City, brown at the edges, drinking water all summer. They want green without the gardener, the water bill, the fertilizer runs and the weekend mowing. Fair enough. Here is what the numbers actually say, and what we supply and install as artificial grass in Abu Dhabi.
What does artificial grass cost in Abu Dhabi in 2026?
Prices have moved since the old headlines. A 2020 Gulf News piece quoted material-only artificial grass from Dh19 per square metre, and put natural grass maintenance at roughly Dh9,600 a year once you count the gardener, water, fertilizer and pesticides. Six years on, that Dh19 is history. Treat it as a reference point, not a quote.
Current installed prices sit in a clear band. A Dubai landscaping guide puts installation at AED 60 to 120 per square metre including materials and labor (zubtalk.com). The National quoted complete installations at Dh75 to 150 per square metre, and priced a 20-square-metre lawn at about Dh3,000 installed. Danube Buildmart’s range started from Dh75 per square metre for turf alone, with installation extra.
Our read: for a villa garden in 2026, AED 60 to 120 per square metre installed is the realistic band for mid-range turf. Below that you are buying thin material. Above Dh150 you are into premium dense turf or complicated groundwork. Message us on WhatsApp for a current per-square-metre quote on your garden, because groundwork is where quotes diverge.
Two gardens the same size can still get very different quotes. Removing an old lawn and its irrigation adds labor. So does levelling a sloped plot, and tight access for materials slows everything down. When you compare quotes, check whether groundwork and old material removal are included or sitting quietly as extras.
Artificial grass vs natural grass: the real math
The sticker price is only half the story. Here is the five-year view.
| Artificial grass | Natural grass | |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost per sqm | AED 60-150 installed (zubtalk.com; The National) | Dh20-40 for sod, plus an irrigation system |
| Yearly upkeep | Near zero: brushing and the odd rinse | About Dh9,600 a year with gardener, water and fertilizer (Gulf News, 2020) |
| Water use in summer | None | Daily irrigation through 45-degree heat |
| Lifespan | 8-12 years for quality turf (accio.com) | Indefinite, with constant care |
| How it looks in August | Green | Stressed, patchy, brown at the edges |
| The row that decides: 5-year cost for 150 sqm | Roughly Dh11,250-22,500, paid once | About Dh48,000 in maintenance alone (Gulf News maths) |
That last row deserves a pause. Gulf News worked it out in 2020: roughly Dh45,150 saved over five years on 150 square metres of artificial turf versus natural grass. Water tariffs and labor have only moved one way since. The payback on a mid-range install now lands inside two to three years for a typical villa garden.
What actually makes one turf better than another?
Pile height is what shoppers notice first. 25mm looks neat and suits balconies. 35 to 40mm looks like a real lawn and feels better underfoot. Past 40mm the blades flop over unless the density backs them up, so height without density is a trap.
Density matters more than height. More stitches per square metre keeps blades upright and the backing hidden. This is where cheap turf fails first. It looks full in the roll and sparse on the ground.
Then the part nobody asks about: UV stabilizers in the yarn. Abu Dhabi sun destroys unstabilized polyethylene within a season or two. Stabilized yarn holds its color for years. Quality turf lasts 8 to 12 years depending on material quality, yarn density, UV protection and foot traffic (accio.com). Our interpretation: the warranty is only as good as the stabilizer. Ask the supplier what is in the yarn, not just how long the warranty runs.
Backing and drainage come next. Multi-layer backing with drainage holes handles the occasional downpour. And infill: silica sand brushed between the blades keeps them standing tall and adds weight against shamal winds. Non-infill turf suits balconies and shaded corners where wind is not a factor.
Color is the last thing to check. Two-tone and three-tone yarns mix green shades with a brown thatch layer at the base, and they read as real grass from a few metres away. Single-tone bright green is what gives turf its fake reputation. Hold the sample at arm’s length in daylight. That is the only test that matters.
Why does cheap grass look terrible after one summer?
This is the blunt section, so here it is plainly. Thin budget turf in direct Abu Dhabi sun fades, flattens and shines. Within a year it has the plasticky look everyone was trying to avoid. Blade tips go pale, the pile lies flat, and the whole lawn reflects light like a green carpet from a discount store.
It happens because the expensive ingredients get cut first. Yarn weight drops, stabilizers disappear, and a tall sparse pile hides both until August arrives.
You cannot spot any of this in a showroom sample under indoor lighting. You spot it in August.
Infill or no infill: does it matter for a villa garden?
For a villa garden with wind exposure, sand infill is worth it. It holds blades upright and stops the turf lifting in a shamal. For a shaded balcony, skip it and save the money.
Where it wins
- No water bills through the summer months
- Green in August when natural lawns give up
- No gardener, no mowing, weekends back
- Safe for kids and pets, drains fast, no mud
Where it loses
- Hot underfoot at midday in July
- Upfront cost stings next to a bag of seed
- Never quite the feel of real grass under bare feet
- Needs a rinse now and then in dusty weather
An honest list. The wins are about money and weekends. The losses are about heat and feel. Most villa owners we talk to accept the trade.
Where in Abu Dhabi villa gardens need it most
Khalifa City is the classic case. Big plots, big water bills, and lawns that fight the heat from May to October. Turf pays for itself fastest here.
Mohammed Bin Zayed City runs close behind. Large gardens, and owners tired of paying a gardener to maintain grass nobody sits on.
Al Ain is hotter and drier than the coast, and water feels scarcer. Turf removes the daily irrigation question entirely.
Yas Island villas sometimes have community landscaping rules, so check what is allowed before ordering. And balcony turf in Al Reem Island towers is a different job: small area, no infill needed, and it transforms a concrete balcony for very little money.
Does artificial grass get too hot in summer?
Yes at midday. The surface climbs in direct July sun. A quick hose-down cools it in minutes, and most families use the garden in the mornings and evenings anyway.
Can I install it myself?
A small balcony, yes, with a sharp knife and patience. A villa garden needs proper base prep: compacted aggregate, weed membrane and level sand. Skimp on the base and every lump shows through.
Will the color fade?
UV-stabilized yarn holds color for years. Unstabilized budget turf fades within a season or two. Ask what stabilizer is in the yarn before you buy, not after.
Is it safe for kids and pets?
Modern turf is non-toxic and hypoallergenic, and it drains fast so there is no mud (Gulf News). Rinse pet areas with water now and then and it stays fresh.
How long does installation take?
A typical villa garden takes a day or two once the base is prepped. Balconies are a few hours. The base prep is the slow part, not the turf.
